Welcome
Why choose The Children's House?
The Children’s House of Los Altos was established in 1978 by Ella Mayon to provide a nurturing, safe, educational setting for children. We give each child an opportunity to grow and learn through positive reinforcement in the areas of social, emotional, cognitive and physical development.

Links   Our philosophy is a melding of the educational theories of John Dewey, Jean Piaget, David Elkind, Maria Montessori, Howard Gardner, Reggio Emilia and Waldorf. We recognize that children learn through active investigation and discovery from their environment and that they love meaningful, hands-on, play based activities. We plan sequentially more challenging curriculum, emerging from their interests, to help children naturally work to refine skills that help them become independent and more capable. We recognize that their self-confidence is derived from independence and independence skills give them the confidence necessary for future learning. We believe that all children are born with unique abilities, and given the opportunity to pursue them, each will discover his unique gift. Children’s House is “the house of the child.” Children’s House envelopes children in beautiful surroundings, that enhance their development, and encourages their exploration.

Upper Campus at Gardner Bullis

Our new upper campus is located at Gardner Bullis Elementary School in Los Altos Hills, just two miles away from our original campus at Loyola. It combines all the best features of our original campus with some new opportunities that are quite special.  We enroll three and four year old children who work together during exploration and discovery.  An art studio and playnasium connect our two classrooms housing science, practical life, social studies, math and language arts activities.  Three lovely terraces provide a large outdoor playhouse, water and art experiences and an extended area where each child tends his own garden. An orchard of fruit trees and grape vines, a “beach” and a community courtyard with gazebo are all part of the lovely setting.  Attached to our grounds is a large playground with climbing structures and swings.  Our day is extended to allow for two foreign language experiences and lunch together.  We have one session of school each day from 8:45-1:00 and children may extend their day at this campus until 5:30pm.
